3-Ingredient Crispy Pan-Fried Halloumi

Halloumi is a unique, salty cheese famous for its satisfying “squeak” and high melting point, which makes it perfect for pan frying. With just a few simple steps, it develops a crisp, golden crust while staying soft and warm on the inside. This quick cooking method brings out its bold flavor and makes it an easy option for appetizers, light meals, or simple home cooking with minimal cleanup.

3-Ingredient Pan-Fried Halloumi

Ingredients

Ingredient Quantity
Halloumi cheese, sliced ½-inch thick 8 oz (225 g)
Olive oil or butter 1 tbsp
Dried oregano or fresh thyme (optional) ½ tsp

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Cheese
Remove the halloumi from the package and slice it into ½-inch thick pieces. Pat each slice completely dry with paper towels. Drying the surface helps create a deep golden crust and keeps the oil from splattering.

Step 2: Heat the Pan
Add the olive oil or butter to a non-stick skillet and place it over medium heat. Allow the pan to fully heat until the oil begins to shimmer.

Step 3: Cook the Halloumi
Arrange the slices in a single layer in the hot pan. Let them cook without moving for 2–3 minutes so a crust can form. Once the bottom is crisp and golden, flip the slices.

Step 4: Add Seasoning (Optional)
If using oregano or thyme, sprinkle it over the halloumi immediately after flipping. This lets the herbs gently toast in the hot fat. Cook the second side for another 2–3 minutes.

Step 5: Serve Immediately
Transfer the halloumi to a plate and serve right away while it’s hot and tender. Enjoy it on its own with a squeeze of fresh lemon, or add it to a Mediterranean-style salad for an extra salty, savory bite.
