Effortless and delicious—the perfect combination! This recipe is definitely a keeper.

There’s something undeniably heartwarming about creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes. They remind us of holidays, Sunday dinners, and the kind of meals where no one’s rushing off right after eating. Traditionally baked in the oven, scalloped potatoes are a French-inspired side dish known for their layered texture and luscious flavor. But for those of us juggling work, family, and the chaos of everyday life, standing over a stove or oven isn’t always an option.

That’s where this slow cooker version comes in. It transforms a classic, hands-on dish into something you can prepare in minutes and let simmer into perfection throughout the day. With just a bit of prep, this version gives you all the rich, savory comfort of the original without any oven babysitting. It’s ideal for busy weeknights, potlucks, or whenever you need a low-effort dish that feels high-effort at the table.

Whether you’re pairing it with roasted chicken, grilled steak, or serving it as part of a vegetarian meal, these scalloped potatoes will earn their place on your regular rotation. They’re creamy, flavorful, and ready when you are—no stress, just comfort food done right.

Slow Cooker Scalloped Potatoes
Servings: 6–8

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 kg (about 3 lbs) potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Directions:

  1. Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, milk, flour, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth.
  3. Layer sliced potatoes in the bottom of the slow cooker. Pour a portion of the cream mixture over the layer, then sprinkle with cheddar and Parmesan.
  4. Repeat layers of potatoes, sauce, and cheese until all ingredients are used, ending with a cheese layer on top.
  5. Dot the top with butter pieces and sprinkle with paprika.
  6. Cover and cook on low for 6–8 hours or on high for 3–4 hours, until potatoes are tender.
  7. Let rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the sauce to thicken and flavors to settle.

Nutrition and Dietary Notes:
This dish is rich in calcium and healthy fats from the cream and cheeses, providing energy and helping with nutrient absorption. Potatoes add fiber, potassium, and complex carbohydrates for sustained energy. It’s vegetarian-friendly but not vegan or dairy-free. For a lighter version, you can use reduced-fat dairy or a plant-based milk and cheese alternative. Those with gluten sensitivities can replace the flour with a gluten-free thickener like cornstarch or arrowroot powder.
