Outback Steakhouse Bloomin’ Onion
Ingredients:

For the Bloomin’ Onion:

Ingredient Quantity
Large sweet onion (such as Vidalia) 1
All-purpose flour 2 cups
Paprika 1 tablespoon
Cayenne pepper 1 teaspoon
Garlic powder 1 teaspoon
Onion powder 1 teaspoon
Salt ½ teaspoon
Black pepper ½ teaspoon
Large eggs 2
Whole milk 1 cup
Vegetable oil For frying

For the Dipping Sauce:

Ingredient Quantity
Mayonnaise ½ cup
Ketchup 2 tablespoons
Prepared horseradish 1 tablespoon
Paprika ½ teaspoon
Salt ¼ teaspoon
Black pepper ¼ teaspoon
Cayenne pepper ¼ teaspoon

Instructions:
Prepare the Onion: Peel the onion and trim off the top, leaving the root end intact. Place it root-side down and cut 16–20 slices from the top down, stopping about ½ inch from the root so it holds together. Gently pull the “petals” apart to create the blooming shape.
Set Up Dredging Stations: In one bowl, mix the flour with paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. In another bowl, whisk the eggs and milk until smooth.
Coat the Onion: Dredge the onion in the seasoned flour, making sure every petal is coated. Shake off excess, dip it into the egg mixture, then return it to the flour for a second coating. Cover every petal well.
Heat Oil & Fry: Heat oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 375°F (190°C). Make sure the oil is deep enough to submerge the onion. Carefully lower the onion, root-side up, into the oil. Fry for 5–7 minutes until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
Make the Dipping Sauce: In a bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, horseradish, paprika, salt, black pepper, and cayenne until blended. Taste and adjust seasoning.
Serve: Place the fried Bloomin’ Onion on a platter and serve hot with the dipping sauce in the center or on the side. Tear off the crispy petals and dip away!
