Sublime Black Velvet Treat

There’s something truly magical about a rich, dark velvet cake. With its deep chocolatey flavor, moist texture, and luxurious frosting, this dessert is a perfect choice for birthdays, special gatherings, or whenever you crave something indulgent. The contrast of velvety cake with creamy frosting creates a delightful experience in every bite. Unlike traditional red velvet, this cake is all about the chocolate—no food coloring, just pure cocoa goodness.

This cake is designed to be soft, moist, and incredibly flavorful. A mix of buttermilk and vegetable oil ensures a tender crumb, while a touch of boiling water deepens the cocoa’s richness. Paired with a luscious chocolate frosting, this dessert is sure to impress both family and guests alike. And if you want to put your own twist on it, there are plenty of variations to explore!

Ingredients:

Cake:

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder (dark or black cocoa recommended)
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 4–5 tbsp milk or heavy cream

Instructions:

1️⃣ Prepare the Cake Batter

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans or line them with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Beat until the batter is smooth.
  4. Slowly pour in the boiling water while stirring continuously. The batter will be thin—this is normal!

2️⃣ Bake the Cake

  1. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans.
  2. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

3️⃣ Make the Frosting

  1. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  2. Gradually sift in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, beating until combined.
  3. Add vanilla extract and 4 tablespoons of milk (or heavy cream), then beat until smooth. Adjust with extra milk if needed for consistency.

4️⃣ Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cooled cake layer on a serving plate and spread a generous layer of frosting on top.
  2. Stack the second layer over it and frost the top and sides.
  3. Garnish with chocolate shavings, fresh berries, or edible glitter for an extra touch of elegance.

Servings: Makes about 12 slices.

Customization Ideas:

  • Add a Coffee Kick: Substitute half the buttermilk with brewed coffee for deeper flavor.
  • Fruity Twist: Layer fresh raspberries between the cake and frosting.
  • Nutty Delight: Sprinkle chopped hazelnuts or almonds for added crunch.

Enjoy your delicious homemade Black Velvet Cake! 🍰
