Easy Amish Baked Custard
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Sweetened condensed milk | 14 ounces |
| Eggs | 6 |
| Hot water | 4 cups |
| Salt | ¼ teaspoon |
| Vanilla extract | 2 teaspoons |
| Ground nutmeg (optional) | To garnish |
Instructions
Preheat and Prepare (10 minutes)
Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Lightly grease a 2-quart baking dish or individual ramekins with butter or non-stick spray to prevent sticking.
Mix the Custard (5 minutes)
In a large bowl, whisk together the sweetened condensed milk, eggs, hot water, salt, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and fully blended.
Pour and Bake (45–60 minutes)
Pour the custard mixture into the prepared baking dish or evenly divide it among ramekins. Place the dish or ramekins inside a larger baking pan. Carefully pour hot water into the outer pan until it reaches about halfway up the sides of the custard dish. Transfer to the oven and bake for 45–60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean. The custard should be set while remaining slightly wobbly in the middle.
Cool and Garnish (at least 2 hours)
Remove the custard from the oven and carefully lift the dish or ramekins out of the water bath. Allow it to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Just before serving, lightly sprinkle ground nutmeg on top if desired for added warmth and flavor.
